Crystals and gemstones really can be of subtle, real help to our physical and emotional well-being. But as with pretty much anything, taking this to extremes, no matter how “in” it is, is just plain silly, as a friend of mine discovered the hard way: At the height of New Age mania, she wore so many crystal necklaces to help ease her chronic neck pain that she actually ended up making it worse from all that added weight. This is why I almost wish (the operative word is “almost”) that using and wearing crystals and other significant gemstones would become such an overhyped fad that it would be offputting to mainstream society—but then, many people would not have benefitted from or given it a try.

The effect crystals and gemstones can have on our health has been acknowledged and taken advantage of for thousands of years. The reason behind that fact is that they’re formed within the earth over countless millennia, absorbing rich, ancient, potent natural energy, and their atoms are arranged with amazing geometric precision. This means that they also emit potent natural energy with geometric precision in a consistent pattern that’s capable of balancing our own often inconsistent energy. And since every natural element on this earth contains a life force, crystals and gemstones are powerful magnetically charged sources of potential healing when they’re used properly.

We humans emit a wide variety of colors in our auras, too, and the colors of various crystalline stones have been found to hold specific health and healing benefits on specific chakras. In case you’re not familiar with chakras, they’re basically the seven energy centers of the life force each of us possesses, our own personal vortexes. In fact, countless physical and emotional health problems manifest themselves in the chakras even before they manifest themselves within the body. The aura surrounding the chakra that rules the potentially affected area of the body will actually appear darker, murkier, duller, and less vital than the rest of the aura, and cleansing, unblocking, and restoring energy to that particular chakra can heal the health problem to which the chakra was reacting. Working with the body’s chakras is a practice that began among the Hindus and Buddhists, by the way, long before Christianity and Judaism were born, so please don’t dismiss them as too “New Age” to be taken seriously.

So, wearing crystals and other gemstones that are known to target specific chakras can definitely be beneficial. The basic guide goes like this:

Amber—targets the spleen chakra in the center of the abdomen; calms nerves

Amethyst—targets both the throat chakra at the base of the throat and the brow chakra in the middle of the forehead; enhances inner peace and spirituality, helps battle addictions

Aquamarine—targets the heart chakra in the center of the chest; enhances strength and a feeling of power in fearful situations

Citrine—targets the spleen chakra; cleanses the body and the aura

Diamond—targets the crown chakra at the top of the head; attracts love, peace, and abundance
